Guess Whos Coming to Dinner - 835 Words

Dinner is about communication whether it is with family or someone you have just met. You exchange stories and learn a lot about a person. So as I say this I have chosen three women to take to dinner not only because they are African American but because they are women so they had to not only deal with racism but also sexism. I am taking Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Angela Davis out to dinner at Paschal’s Restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. I am taking them here because this is a place that used to host civil rights leaders and strategists for meals when they wanted to discuss what can be done. This place has a history with the African American community so it is not only a great conversation starter but also a place that all three the people I choose can have a connection to even if they were never part of the Civil Rights time period because they all fought for the same thing the people that used to meet here fought for. My first person I invited was Sojourner Truth beca use she was a strong woman that fought for her rights and was very accomplished. She was the first African American woman to successfully challenge a white man in court. She won the case to get her son back and that is so inspirational because most of her time period would have thought it was a lost cause. If I was to ask her any questions my first question would be if she ever got discouraged and felt like there was no hope at some points in her fight for abolition and women’s rights? Summary Of A Lesson Before Dying - 1688 Words

Alia F. AlKhairi†¨Nolan AP English Lit. †¨4 September, 2015 A Lesson Before Dying Year: 1993 Title: A Lesson Before Dying The title of this novel â€Å"A Lesson Before Dying† is what the book’s plot revolves around. Dying refers to Jefferson’s death, while the lesson refers to the lessons learnt by Jefferson, the white community, and Grant. Lesson 1: The article ‘a’ means that there is one, single lesson that is being taught before someone’s death, which is what the title really refers to in the shallowest sense. This lesson talks about Grant (teacher), the protagonist, teaching Jefferson (student) how to die with dignity by teaching him: How To Be a Man. The author chose this title to make the reader -in the beginning of the novel- anticipate that the only lesson that will be given is the one taught by Grant and learnt by Jefferson. We expect the end result to be just that. Lesson 2: By the end of the novel, we come to find that the lesson learned before Jefferson’s death goes deeper than only him learning how to be a man: You Never Know the Value Of What You Have Until You Lose It; when an individual dies, others begin to realise the true value that his/her life had/may have potentially had. As a result of inequality and corruption in the judicial system, Jefferson’s (now playing the role of the teacher) life is sacrificed in order for the white people in the community (students) to gain a better understanding of the value of the black members of society (lesson).Show MoreRelatedA Lesson Before Dying Summary Notes1827 Words   |  8 PagesCorinne Murdock Nolan AP Lit 10 August 2015 A Lesson Before Dying Summary Notes Title of Book †¢ Entire novel about a teacher trying to teach a man named Jefferson that he is a man, not a hog, before he is executed. †¢ It was important for Jefferson’s caretaker, Miss Emma, and the entire black community that he dies as a man- proud and brave. Suez Crisis free essay sample

Lee states, ‘There was no internal split in the Conservative party’. Kilmuir agrees with this, and goes onto talk about, ‘Our most lost party workers, although dismayed by our handling of the situation were consumed with the hatred of the Labour party. ’ Which means even though they were going through a tough situation the Conservatives kept a strong front and were all in it together against Labour; even the media gave publicity in which spread the disgust to the public about the Labour party. Overall it shows Labour actually had it worse off; they weren’t popular with the public at the time, this later shows at the 1959 general election as Macmillan takes a victory for the Conservatives. On the other hand, Kilmuir was a member of the Conservatives at the time and he might have wanted to give the public the idea that the situation wasn’t as bad as it seemed as his party just caused a major international tensions with our allies. We will write a custom essay sample on Suez Crisis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Although he does admit that, ‘Even the most hostile critics of the Conservative party’ had their doubtful moments in the party giving the idea that the party had nothing to hide and that its members knew there would be some slight internal tensions. Opposing the statement, in Source 4, Rowe tells us that after the Suez Crisis, ‘†¦there as a sharp economic crisis’ and that, ‘Politically, Eden was finished. ’. This was true about the economy as there was a international run on sterling, which threatened Britain with economic collapse with no hope of the USA willing to bale Britain out. There were further large withdrawals of deposits by international investors which lead to a major fall in Britain’s currency reserves. This of course damaged the Conservatives greatly as Britain was still trying to recover economically from WWII and this crisis set Britain back about 4 years economically according to an account from Gaitskell; being from the Labour party he may of exaggerated some of these numbers as he produced no evidence of his findings. It also did finish Eden apparently; as he was removed from the party but in Source 5 it says it was because of ‘ill health’ not because of the Crisis itself. People expected R. A. Butler to take over but as he wasn’t much help during the crisis when he took over from Eden. It was actually Macmillan who took control of the Conservatives. Showing the Conservatives they had to change their party structure because they had been damaged by leading Britain into this crisis. Overall, to a certain extent I disagree with the statement because I think that Eden was damaged significantly by the Suez Crisis as he lead Britain into some economic problems which left him politically finished. However, to a larger extent I agree with the statement that it did no damage to the fortunes of the Conservative party even though it had some short term damage at the beginning for example, Eden was removed and they had to shuffle the party leadership, Macmillan then saved the party and won the later 1959 General election with the increasing of public consumption resulting in a period of affluence whilst Labour was left in the gutter constantly in internal party feuds leaving the Conservatives victorious and prosperous.
